What Is Speed To Lead? The Definition, The Research, And Why It Decides Who Gets The Job

Speed to lead is the time between a new lead arriving and a real conversation. Here is what the research says it does to your close rate, and why home service businesses lose on it.

By Ross Dillon · Updated September 2, 2026

Speed to lead is the time between a new lead arriving and a human conversation with that lead. Not the time to a notification, not the time to an auto-reply — the time until someone at your business is actually talking to the customer. For home service businesses it's measured from the moment a Google Local Services Ads, Yelp, or Thumbtack request lands to the moment you're on the phone.

Why It Decides Who Gets The Job

Homeowners don't request one quote. They request several, from the same couch, in the same minute. Then they hire whoever answers first — not whoever is best. The research on this is old, consistent, and brutal:

  • The odds of contacting a lead if called within 5 minutes versus 30 minutes drop 100×. The odds of qualifying that lead drop 21×. (Lead Response Management Study, Dr. James Oldroyd, MIT, with InsideSales.com, 2007)
  • From 5 minutes to 10 minutes alone, qualifying odds fall . (Same study)
  • Businesses that responded to a test lead within an hour were nearly more likely to qualify it than those that waited even one hour more — and more than 60× more likely than those that waited 24 hours. (Oldroyd, McElheran & Elkington, Harvard Business Review, March 2011)
  • Calling within one minute of lead creation lifted conversion by 391% across roughly 3.5 million leads. (Velocify, The Ultimate Contact Strategy)

How Slow Most Businesses Actually Are

The HBR study sent a test lead to 2,241 U.S. companies. Among those that responded within 30 days, the average response time was 42 hours. Only 37% responded within an hour. 23% never responded at all.

Home services is worse than average in one specific way: the owner is the sales team, and the owner is working. 27% of calls to home service businesses go unanswered (Invoca call data, 2023–2024), and 78% of consumers say they've abandoned a business after a single unanswered call (CallRail consumer survey, n=1,000, 2025).

What "Good" Looks Like

The benchmarkUnder one minute is the research-backed target. Under 10 seconds is what Lead Dominator is built to do: the customer is texted instantly, your phone rings with a whisper of the job, and you press 1 to connect — from your own business number.

Speed To Lead Vs. "Auto-Reply"

An auto-reply is not speed to lead. "Thank you for contacting us, a representative will reach out shortly" starts no conversation and books no job — and homeowners have learned to ignore it. Speed to lead means a specific, personal response about the customer's actual request, followed by a human on the phone while the customer is still holding theirs.

On Google, Speed Is Also A Ranking Factor

Google lists "your responsiveness to customer inquiries and requests" among the factors that decide Local Services Ads ranking, notes missed calls may hurt it, and shows your response time in the ad. A slow callback costs you the lead in front of you and the next one. See how response time affects your Google LSA ranking.
